Baby boomers: 1 - My generation: 0

Over 55? It's the time of your life - but spare a thought for those poor under-25s

Free from financial responsibilities, they are having the time of their lives travelling the world.

And while at home, their main concern is fixing up when to see friends for an evening's socialising.

That's the over-55s, of course. The under 25s, in contrast, are the generation most likely to be lonely and stressed by money worries, a survey claims.

It found that the so- called baby boomers, named after the population explosion following the Second World War, have lifestyles closer to the traditional perception of those in their late teens or early 20s.

Researchers said it showed that society's view of ageing is 'fundamentally flawed'.

The survey asked 2,100 adults to identify which feelings and activities they believed were typical of certain age groups.

A week later, the participants were asked which of the same feelings and activities applied to them and their friends.

Their answers revealed a widely-held belief that over- 55s are more likely to be lonely, have few hobbies or do anything adventurous.

By contrast, those under 25 were assumed to be having the most fun, with endless time for hobbies, socialising, playing sport and travelling.

In reality, however, the researchers found that the baby boomers were the most happy and content of any age group, while the 18 to 25-year-olds had the greatest chance of being lonely and having the biggest financial worries.

And while their parents are more likely to be active in the community and travel abroad, under-25s are the least likely to be in a satisfying relationship or to have a nice home of their own.

I can attest to this. At nearly 21 years old, I am definitely very stressed out most of the time, usually regarding money (which I have absolutely none of). Seems like every day everyone is just waiting for me to get up and do something to make money but personally I don't see anything worth doing. I don't want to be involved in the banking system in any way, or be in debt. I sometimes feel like I'm already really old, lacking energy and just waiting to die instead of doing something better with my time and having fun. Looks like someone is doing everything they can to turn my generation into what I already am: Someone ready for revolution. But since it's all planned in advance, I'm not sure how to transmute this neutral signal into something positive...

I don't think this is fair in the least. Shouldn't my age group be enjoying our youth instead of worrying about everything because a bunch of damn baby boomers are screwing everything up and having "the time of their lives" while the world collapses around them? (This is why I try and avoid reading the news, but I was already pretty much thinking this before reading the article. I idolize some of the people in that age range, so please don't take this as being hateful towards an entire group.)

No offense to any "baby boomers" reading this... To be honest, they are most likely not responsible for the state of things in general....
