A man who allegedly paid the mother of a 14-year-old girl so he could have sex with the child has been charged with sexual assault.
According to the Denver district attorney's office, Mark Mathias, 48, paid the mother money over a 10-month period. Investigators said that from June 18, 2008, through March 31, Mathias repeatedly sexually assaulted the girl.
The child told investigators that her mother would use a cellphone to contact different men, telling them that "fresh meat (was) available."
Detective Kenneth Klaus said in court documents that when the mother's cellphone records were reviewed, "an extensive contact list was revealed."

Landslide triggered by rains kills 42 in India
A landslide triggered by torrential seasonal rains swept through a hilly region in southern India, killing at least 42 people, an official said Tuesday.
The landslide demolished nearly 300 tin-roofed mud huts Monday in the Ooty and Coonoor region of Tamil Nadu state, a state flood control official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters. The region is nearly 1,120 miles (1,800 kilometers) south of the capital, New Delhi.
Rescuers found 14 bodies in the debris Monday and another 28 on Tuesday, the official said, adding that eight injured people were hospitalized.
The death toll was expected to rise further with the rescue operation continuing in the region, the official said.
Koreas Exchange Fire in Naval Clash
SEOUL, South Korea — A badly damaged North Korean patrol ship retreated in flames Tuesday after a skirmish with a South Korean naval vessel along their disputed western coast, South Korean officials said.
The first naval clash in seven years broke out just a week before President Obama is due to visit Seoul, raising suspicions the North's communist regime is trying to rachet up tensions to gain a negotiating advantage.
There were no South Korean casualties, the country's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, and it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties on the North Korean side. Each side blamed the other for violating the sea border.

Last night I watched two movies, Mulholland Dr. and Blood Simple. I picked both pretty much at random. Both movies featured actor Dan Hedaya, which I was surprised to see. In Blood Simple, he plays a guy who is shot, but when one of the main characters believes him to be dead, he "comes back to life" (death and rebirth/Zombie) but is soon taken care of. Blood Simple is a very good movie, and it really makes use of the "hidden hand" theme which is an essential part of any mystery (though, the viewer is completely aware of what's going on, it's the characters in the movie which are confused and suspicious of eachother). Mulholland Dr. on the other hand.... I had a really hard time sitting through this movie. I have to admit, I kind of liked Lost Highway. Inland Empire was entirely forgettable. By the end of Mulholland, I was mocking the characters on-screen aloud.
Any guess as to what's behind Door #17??

If you guessed "A Corpse", you win the prize!

I tried to get into this movie, and it had me for a lot of the scenes in the middle of the movie. It was the beginning (which had me bored to tears) and the end (which was needlessly confusing and didn't tie up any loose ends for me) that kind of killed it in my opinion. I understand the symbolism to some extent, but that's all the movie is. I'm not an expert on movies by any stretch of the imagination, but I have watched some pretty "artsy" movies in my time, and this one just struck a bad chord with me. I wonder if that was the intention, but it's not going to get me to watch it again (It's soooo slow. It was like finishing a test early and waiting for everyone else to finish rather than watching a movie). I just wanted to yell at everyone in the movie to quit walking around like zombies and actually do something. Blood Simple had this same problem, but since it's a Coen brothers movie you know there's going to be some suspense built around the characters' inability to function like normal human beings.
Maybe I just don't "get" Lynch. His movies really don't make me think. They get on my nerves and make me imagine all the smug people who would scoff at me for even daring to object to his filmmaking style.

funny.
today I was going through and tagging old posts.
I looked at this post about Mulholland Drive. I view that film more like a wonderland. Most of his films operate within dream logic, and in the dark realms.
interesting stuff, Tommy.
I watched the movie very late at night, which assured that I was somewhere within the "dark dream realms" (I guess), so maybe it was the fact that I wanted to sleep which made me not want to watch it very much. The whole movie has some very dark themes at play, but I found myself thinking "oh no, I'm not gonna get pulled into this state of mind". Which I'm guessing is exactly what Lynch wanted.
